This "How to use a Compass" site has been put together by Kjetil Kjernsmo, it goes through the very basics of how to use and troubleshoot the compass.

I will let you see that there is a lot of information that can be derived from a plastic box with a compact mirror, and a spinny needle with a dial that has a whole bunch of numbers on it....
